Mass Flow Measurement of Chlorine after Electrolysis

At a membrane electrolysis operator in southern Germany, the chlorine, which is produced out of the brine solution, becomes dryed and later liquified at temperatures around -30 °C.
The liquified chlorine is then led, in a carbon steel line, to the synthesis of ultrapure hydrochloric acid.

For the correct balancing of the chlorine mass flow, a  coriolis mass flow meter has been used in the past. Due to the high corrosiveness of the chlorine and the thus related wear on the device, the coriolis meter suffered subsequent measurement drift and was a safety risk due to potential leaks. As of the required frequent and especially expensive maintenance works of the coriolis meter, the operator was looking for a more durable and cost effective measurement solution.

On the basis of the non-invasive ultrasonic flowmeter technology with FLUXUS, FLEXIM could offer an accurate and highly reliable as well as long term stable measurement system. FLUXUS, which is mounted on the outside of the pipe wall, measures the chlorine mass flow rate without direct contact to the medium - and thus without any elaborate, expensive and risky maintenance works. Even the low temperatures around -30 °C are not a challenge for the FLUXUS flow meter.
